Xbox Mode in Windows 11 is a console-inspired, controller-optimized gaming environment designed to make a PC easier to use from a couch, television, or handheld device. Although its interface has similarities to Steam Big Picture, Xbox Mode is integrated into Windows and can provide a more focused full-screen workflow for launching and switching between games. For ordinary desktops and laptops, however, Microsoft does not currently promise that simply entering Xbox Mode will increase FPS, so it is better viewed primarily as a usability feature unless testing on a particular system demonstrates otherwise.
What Xbox Mode Actually Does
Xbox Mode is Microsoft's dedicated gaming experience for Windows 11. When it is active, Windows opens a gaming home application that acts as a launcher, while games and supported applications are presented in a full-screen environment designed around controller navigation.
The interface is intended to reduce the need to interact with the conventional Windows desktop. Players can navigate their game library, launch titles, access Game Bar, and move between running applications while using a controller.
Microsoft originally introduced the experience on gaming handhelds under the name Xbox full screen experience. It was subsequently renamed Xbox Mode and expanded to conventional Windows 11 form factors including desktops, laptops, and tablets.
How Xbox Mode Compares With Steam Big Picture
Xbox Mode and Steam Big Picture solve a similar usability problem. Both provide large, controller-friendly interfaces that are easier to operate from a television or from a distance than a conventional Windows desktop.
The important difference is that Big Picture is a mode inside the Steam client, whereas Xbox Mode is integrated into Windows itself. Xbox Mode can therefore affect how Windows presents applications, Task View, Game Bar, and the transition between a gaming-focused environment and the regular desktop.
